On July 5, 2002, Red Sox legend Ted Williams passed away, and to honor "Teddy Ballgame", the Sox wore #9 and a black armand from July 6 onward. Nomar Garciaparra had a strong season in this uniform, as he made his fourth All-Star appearance and led the league in doubles with 56.
